Why MP4 beats GIF for sharing

GIF was designed in 1987 for tiny web graphics. It stores every frame almost uncompressed with at most 256 colours, so a few seconds of animation can run to 10–20 MB. MP4 with H.264 stores only the differences between frames and supports millions of colours, which is why the same clip is a fraction of the size and looks smoother. Social apps such as Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp status only accept video, not GIF.
