Stacked discounts do not add up
An extra 20% off an item already reduced by 30% is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so you pay 0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56 of the original – a 44% reduction, not 50%. To model this, run the calculator twice, using the first result as the starting price for the second discount.
Working backwards from a sale price
If a tag shows a sale price and an original price and you want the percentage, divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100 – or use our percentage calculator's increase/decrease mode, which does exactly that. It is a useful check when a shop advertises "up to 70% off" and the item in your hand is closer to 15%.
Tax and the order of operations
Discounts are applied before sales tax almost everywhere, because tax is charged on the amount you actually pay. That is the order used here: the discount comes off first, then the tax percentage is applied to the reduced price. If you enter a VAT-inclusive price, leave the tax field at zero.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. Enter both figures and the calculator does it instantly.
How do I work out 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off 50 is 50 × 0.8 = 40.
How do stacked discounts work?
They multiply rather than add. 30% off then a further 20% off leaves you paying 56% of the original, a 44% total discount.
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
After, in almost all jurisdictions – tax is charged on what you actually pay. The calculator follows that order.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25%-off item costing 60 was originally 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
Is it free?
Yes, completely, with no sign-up.
