What JPG to PNG can and cannot do
Converting to PNG stops any further quality loss: from this point on you can edit and save the image repeatedly with no degradation. What it cannot do is restore detail the JPG has already thrown away, or magically add a transparent background – a JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG will be fully opaque unless you remove the background in an editor afterwards.

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?
It preserves the current quality perfectly, but cannot recover detail lost when the JPG was originally compressed.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPGs are always opaque, so the PNG will be too. Use a background-removal tool afterwards if you need transparency.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG compresses without discarding information, which takes more space for photographic content. A 1 MB JPG often becomes a 4–8 MB PNG.
Can I convert JPEG as well as JPG?
