How much to tip

Tipping customs vary enormously. In the United States 18–20% is the restaurant norm and staff wages assume it; in the UK and much of Europe 10–12.5% is typical and service is often already included; in Japan and South Korea tipping is generally not practised at all and can cause confusion. When travelling, check whether a service charge already appears on the bill before adding anything.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount

In places with sales tax added at the till, either convention is common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more logical, since tax is not part of the service, but the difference on a typical bill is small. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount and the calculator follows it.

Splitting fairly

The per-person figures divide the total evenly, which is the right approach when everyone ate similarly. When one person had significantly more, it is fairer to work out the individual subtotals and apply the same tip percentage to each, then use this calculator to check the total adds up.
