Why designers use nonsense text

Placeholder text exists so that people looking at a layout judge the layout. Real copy pulls attention to the message – a client reads the words, reacts to the wording, and never comments on the line length or the hierarchy you actually wanted feedback on. Lorem ipsum has the letter distribution and word-length rhythm of Latin-alphabet prose without carrying meaning, so it looks like text while staying invisible as content.

Where lorem ipsum came from

The passage is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's *De finibus bonorum et malorum*, written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it as a specimen since at least the 1500s, and it entered modern design through Letraset sheets and later desktop publishing software. The familiar opening is a corruption of "dolorem ipsum" – "pain itself" – which is why it looks like Latin but does not quite parse.

Do not ship it

Placeholder text escaping into production is a genuinely common and embarrassing bug – it has appeared in printed brochures, on live homepages and in mobile app store listings. Before launch, search your codebase and CMS for "lorem" and "ipsum". If a page is not ready, an honest note is better than Latin nobody meant to publish.
