Why photos show up sideways

Cameras and phones usually save the picture the way the sensor captured it and add an EXIF ‘orientation’ tag telling viewers to rotate it. Many apps – older Windows tools, some web upload forms, WordPress themes, email clients – ignore that tag and show the image on its side. Rotating here rewrites the actual pixels, so there is no tag to be ignored and the image is upright everywhere.

Mirror flips

Front-facing phone cameras often save selfies mirrored. Flip horizontal corrects text and logos that read backwards. Flip vertical is useful for scanned negatives and for creating reflection effects in design work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a photo 90 degrees?

Add the photo, select Rotate 90° clockwise (or counter-clockwise) and click Rotate.

Does rotating lose quality?

With PNG output, no. With JPG output there is a negligible re-encode at your chosen quality (default 90).

Can I rotate many images at once?

Yes – the same rotation is applied to every file in the batch.

Can I rotate by a custom angle like 15°?

Currently rotations are 90°, 180° and 270° plus flips, which covers orientation fixes. Arbitrary angles are on our roadmap.

Will the rotated image be upright on every device?

Yes, because the pixels themselves are rotated rather than relying on an orientation tag.
