Which case to use where

Sentence case – only the first word and proper nouns capitalised – is now the standard for headlines at most publications and in most design systems, because it reads faster and feels less shouty. Title Case capitalises each significant word and still dominates in American publishing and academic citations. All caps is legitimate for short labels and buttons, but it slows reading measurably in longer strings because word shapes disappear, so avoid it for anything more than a few words.

Cases for code and URLs

camelCase and PascalCase remove spaces and mark word boundaries with capitals; they are the convention for variables and classes in most languages. snake_case joins words with underscores and is standard in Python and in database columns. kebab-case joins them with hyphens and is what you want for URL slugs and CSS class names – search engines treat hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, which is why URLs should use hyphens.

What automatic conversion cannot know

Title case is applied mechanically here: every word gets a capital. Real style guides keep short conjunctions, articles and prepositions lowercase unless they start or end the title, and no algorithm knows whether "Apple" is a company or a fruit. Sentence case cannot recognise proper nouns either. Convert first, then read the result once and fix names by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change text from capitals to lowercase?

Paste the text and click "lower case". The whole block converts instantly.

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?

Title Case capitalises every significant word; Sentence case capitalises only the first word and proper nouns.

What is camelCase?

A coding convention where words are joined with no spaces and each word after the first starts with a capital, such as myVariableName.

Should URLs use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, so kebab-case is the right choice for slugs.

Does it fix proper nouns automatically?

No. Conversion is mechanical, so check names and brands after converting.

Is my text uploaded?

No, conversion happens entirely in your browser.
