FFmpeg in the browser: how it works

FFmpeg is the open-source engine behind most video software in the world. Convert Now loads a WebAssembly build of it (about 30 MB, downloaded once and cached) and runs it in a background thread. That means the same codecs the professionals use – H.264, AAC, MP3 – with none of the privacy trade-offs of an upload service.

What to expect on speed and size

Because encoding happens on your CPU rather than a server farm, it is best suited to clips up to a few hundred megabytes. Extracting audio is very fast; re-encoding video takes roughly real time on a modern laptop and longer on phones. If a video is very large, trim it or lower the resolution first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the first conversion slower?

The video engine (≈30 MB) has to be downloaded the first time you use any video tool in a session. After that it is cached and starts instantly.

What formats can I import?

MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, M4V and most other common containers, plus audio files for the MP3 extractor.

Is there a size limit?

We cap inputs at 300 MB per file to keep things responsive in the browser. For bigger files, compress or trim on a desktop first.

Will there be a watermark?

No. Output is clean, full quality, yours.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, on recent iPhones and Android phones, though longer videos take more time than on a computer.
