What AVIF is and why it is showing up everywhere
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec, backed by Netflix, Google, Apple and Mozilla. It compresses photos roughly 50% better than JPG and 20% better than WebP, supports HDR and transparency, and is now served by many large websites and CDNs. Browsers display it fine, but a downloaded .avif file is still a mystery to most desktop software – hence the need to convert.
Browser support for decoding
Your browser does the AVIF decoding, so it must support the format: Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Edge 121+, and Safari 16+ on macOS Ventura / iOS 16 or later. On older Safari versions the file will fail to load – update the browser or use a different one.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my AVIF file open?
Most image editors and older operating systems do not support AVIF yet. Convert it to JPG here and it will open anywhere.
Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?
Slightly, as JPG is lossy; keep quality at 90+ to make it invisible. For lossless output use the image converter with PNG selected.
Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or newer. Older Safari versions cannot decode AVIF.
Can I convert AVIF in bulk?
Yes – up to 100 files at a time.
Is the conversion private?
Yes. Files are decoded and re-encoded on your device.
